For the past 5 years the local chapters of Trout Unlimited, a national cold-water conservation club, have been installing low-cost yet highly effective in-stream trout habitat structures in Paint Creek. This work is helping sustain the brown trout population in the only stream designated as “cold-water” in Southeast lower Michigan.
Joe Bruce will present the history and science behind this work, where the work has been done to date, how the structures function, and plans for additional in-stream habitat work in future years. He will also present the scientific evidence gathered by the Michigan DNR that proves this work is making a difference, including data indicating there is now natural reproduction of the brown trout population.
Joe is the Conservation Chair for the local Vanguard Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He is a 25-year resident of Rochester Hills. Joe has a BS in Fishery and Aquatic Biology from Cornell University, and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He enjoys fly fishing in Paint Creek and feels lucky to have such a special resource so close to his home.
