Can you believe it is already almost September? The summer flew by in the blink of an eye. This year’s crew was able to accomplish so much in such a short amount of time. They picked hundreds of pounds of garlic mustard and sprayed patches and patches of crown vetch, swallow-wort, and invasive shrubs. They all enjoyed attending the bird walks, participating in an Eastern Massassauga Rattlesnake survey, and connecting with our wonderful group of volunteers.
While all those moments were amazing, they also appreciated the small moments, like when the golden rays of sunlight slowly crept through the barn door, surrounded by the laughs of coworkers and a stiff breeze spreading the smell of coffee still too hot to drink. If that wasn’t enough, they were also able to write some amazing blog posts about topics like toads and frogs, oak apples, and Blanding’s turtles. Without their hard work, our parks wouldn’t look nearly as good as they do now!

Alexis Sell is returning to Michigan State University to complete her bachelor’s degree in Forestry and Fisheries & Wildlife, and plans to graduate in May of 2025. Her career goal after graduating is to work in habitat restoration.
Mark Peters will also return to Michigan State University for his junior year to continue his studies in Forestry. He is excited to apply what he has learned to his studies and hopes for a career in land preservation and management.
Jarred McPherson will be returning to Michigan State University to finish his Environmental Science and Management degree and is set to graduate in 2025. He is looking forward to delving into the world of environmental science and was inspired by the passion and dedication shown by the volunteers and the Oakland Township staff.

We truly appreciate their hard work, consistent curiosity, and positive attitudes this summer. Their contributions to our parks will have a lasting impact for years to come. We wish them the best of luck as they return to school and pursue their future endeavors. You will be missed!

You expressed my impression of this crew wonderfully, Grant. What a competent and hard-working bunch and what a contribution they made! Your leadership and warmth with them, as well as Ben’s guidance, were a big part of a successful experience for them and for our parks. My thanks to you, Ben and this excellent summer crew.
